CITY OF TERAMO
This is what Teramo offers to those who choose it as their holiday destination. The town encapsulates all the peculiarities of the Abruzzo region.
Located in the rolling hills that slope down from the Gran Sasso hills towards the Adriatic Sea, it allows tourists to enjoy the verdant Abruzzo landscape to the full.
Whether in a hotel, bed and breakfast, camping, village or camper van, whatever type of holiday you choose, the modern accommodation facilities and the knowledgeable and helpful staff make Teramo one of the Abruzzo destinations par excellence, where families with children are welcome.
Days on the Silver Beach can be combined with visits to the city of Teramo, whose historic centre bears witness to its pre-Roman origin: in its alleys, strolling among the historic palazzi and ancient churches, you will find yourself enraptured in an atmosphere outside of time. The Cathedral, built in Romanesque style in the lower part and in Gothic style in the upper part, is worth a visit; the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, just outside the city, very dear to the pilgrims of the area; the Archaeological Museum and the Civic Museum.
With spring, Teramo's characteristic events and festivals begin: festivals, art exhibitions, sports tournaments, art competitions and even the white night.
For those who love shopping, there are many shops in the historic centre and large shopping centres just a few kilometres from Teramo. For an evening with friends, there is nothing better than a good restaurant, where you can enjoy typical Abruzzo dishes, from meat to fish, you will certainly find the dish for you! Gastronomic tourism is in fact one of the most important in the area: there are many agritourisms in the hinterland that offer typical menus throughout the year, with organic products grown directly by local farms.
Teramo is the starting point for itineraries of great natural and cultural interest. Relaxation and greenery at the Gran Sasso National Park, near the city, a true paradise for nature and animal lovers, who here have the opportunity to observe animals in a protected area, but free in their habitat. It is also possible to eat and sleep in the National Park area.
A capital city rich in history and culture, Teramo still retains evidence of ancient dominations, at the Necropolis of Campovalano, in Campli, an archaeological site of great anthropological interest, where the remains of more than 600 tombs dating from a period between the end of the Bronze Age and the Roman era have been brought to light.
In the historical re-enactments, in the festivals that especially in the summer attract the attention of tourists, one can rediscover the tradition of a city firmly rooted in its past and its roots, but with a lively culture, witnessed by the University, the world's largest Nuclear Physics Laboratory, the nearby Astronomical Observatory (in Collurania) and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute.
